Imaging software and dental sensor integration is one of the most common concerns for dentists. According to a Software Advice report, digital sensor integration is the most requested software functionality among dentists. That is why DentiMax developed the DentiMax Native Capture Module, which allows the Dream Sensor to natively capture to Dexis ® without the need for a TWAIN driver.
What is the Native Capture Module?
The DentiMax Native Capture Module allows you to use the DentiMax Dream Sensor directly into the Dexis Imaging Suite™. Whether you have Dexis® 9 or 10, it doesn’t matter, you just plug the Dream Sensor in and open up Dexis®. It will capture to Dexis exactly like the Dexis® Sensor because it is capturing natively. You won’t notice any difference in your workflow between the Dexis® Sensor and our Dream Sensor, except our images look even better!
This innovation is exciting because Dexis Imaging Suite™ is a closed system for a lot of devices out there. Normally imaging software applications are built with specific hardware in mind which means that other devices can’t be used in the imaging software application. Since Dexis Imaging Suite™ is a closed system, to use other devices in the application, you must use a TWAIN driver.
There are extra costs to use the TWAIN driver. Dexis® charges an extra $1,500 per installation of the imaging suite to add on their third-party TWAIN sensor module. That is the cost to just use the TWAIN driver! The TWAIN driver has a nominal cost as well. It costs $300 to install it on the first capture computer and an additional $100 per capture computer (one-time fee). For example, if you have five operatories that you take X-rays in, it would cost $700 plus the $1,500 Dexis sensor module fee.
Not only are there extra costs involved, but you will have an extra window too. The TWAIN interface window pops up to have the images returned. The TWAIN interface acts as a middleman between the sensor and the Dexis® software, whereas, the Native Capture Module removes the TWAIN interface allowing your workflow to stay the same.
The Difference Between a DentiMax Dream Sensor versus a Dexis® Sensor
The Dexis® Sensor (size 1.5) is a smaller, thicker sensor compared to our Dream Sensor (size 2) which has a larger footprint and is much thinner. With the Dream Sensor, you can easily capture four teeth, plus, in a single mandibular molar PA, while with the Dexis® Sensor you can only get two or maybe three teeth when placing the sensor horizontally. In addition, the Dream Sensor is a lot more comfortable for patients because it is only 5.4 millimeters thick, while the Dexis® Sensor is 8.3 millimeters.
Our image quality is phenomenal and we are known for our award-winning image. It’s got all the best features including rounded, beveled corners (all four, not just two) and it’s the thinnest CMOS sensor on the market so it’s very comfortable for the patients. The Dream Sensor is durable with a Kevlar®-reinforced cable which reinforces the area where the cable enters the sensor housing (the "weak spot" for virtually all dental sensors on the market). This allows you to bend the cable 90 degrees or more to take vertical shots with the Dream Sensor without stressing or breaking the cable!
Another advantage is, of course, the price. The DentiMax Dream Sensor is about half the price of the Dexis® Sensor. You can get twice as many DentiMax Sensors as you would for their sensors! We also have a better manufacturer warranty. The DentiMax Sensor has a three-year manufacturer warranty and replaces the broken sensor with a brand-new sensor. Meanwhile, Dexis® only has a two-year warranty and replaces the broken sensor with a refurbished sensor. We also have a five-year protection plan. It’s an awesome deal for an all-around better sensor.
How the DentiMax Image Compares to the Dexis® Image
Dexis has a unique tool called ClearVu™ that a majority of practices that use the system leave turned on at all times. Otherwise, the images look slightly blurry. With the DentiMax Native Capture Module, ClearVu™ optimizes all the images so they look like Dexis images, except they are higher resolution, so you can see more detail.
A case in point: I was just working with an office that uses Dexis® sensors. They decided to take advantage of our DentiMax Try Before You Buy program, so they were able to take X-rays with the DentiMax Dream sensor in their Dexis Image Suite™ and compare them to their Dexis® sensor X-rays that they have been using for years now. They took the X-rays with the DentiMax Sensor and the first images they saw, the staff said: "What’s this? What’s this line here?"
Then the doctor came over and said: "That’s the patient’s lips!" When looking more closely, you could see the patient’s lips with the Dexis® X-ray (same patient and same shot) but it’s harder to decipher because the Dexis® image has a lower resolution and less contrast than their new X-rays taken with the DentiMax Dream Sensor.
